Full Description
C.E. Bean reported that '...old people say that more [burials] were found on land to the south of Newland, immediately opposite The Avenue.' (1) Furthermore, Hutchins refers to discoveries made in the south side of Newland, when a row of houses were taken down by Mr George Hutchings to enlarge his garden. A number of human bones and, in one of the houses, an ancient baptismal font were discovered (2).
These two references may actually relate to the same event, the discovery of human burials on the south side of Newland. Alternatively they may record two separate events of similar discoveries of burials in a similar location. In either case, the burials appear to be part of a larger cemetery in the Newland area, possibly assocaited with a putative church of St. Swithin.
