Summary

Bronze Age bowl barrow, part of an extensive linear barrow cemetery running along the ridgeway. In 1972 this monument was reported as being around 50 feet in diameter with a mound about 2½ feet high. This barrow was opened in March 1884 by antiquarian Edward Cunnington, who found an inhumation burial in the form of a contracted skeleton with a food vessel, and a cremation burial near its feet. Visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.

Full Description

Grinsell recorded this barrow as 18 paces in diameter and 1 foot in height. He interpreted Cunnington's finds as apparently a crouched primary adult male inhumation, secondary Late Bronze Age shouldered bucket urn protected by slabs near head, at feet was a cremation, all beneath a cairn. <2> Round barrows on Ridgeway Hill: 'D' Bowl (66468861).50 yds. N E of 'C'. Diam. about 50 ft., ht. 2 1/2 ft. Ploughed. Contained cairn of large stones covering primary (?) contracted male inhumation with a cremation near its feet and a bucket urn, now in D.C.M., near its head. <4> D SY 66468661. Bowl barrow, diameter 18.0m, height 0.3m. All these barrows are in arable and have been ploughed. None has a visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. <5> Visible as a cropmark ring ditch with a central pit on aerial photographs <8>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
