Summary
A extensive series of linear extractive pits are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs to the south of West and East Shilvington Farms. They appear to closely follow the underlying geological strata which is also visible as low earthworks and cropmarks. They are considered likely to be post medieval in date although an earlier meieval origin is possible.

Full Description
A extensive series of linear extractive pits are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs to the south of West and East Shilvington Farms {1-3}. They appear to closely follow the underlying geological strata which is also visible as low earthworks and cropmarks. They are considered likely to be post medieval in date although an earlier meieval origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
