Summary

A World War II type 26 pillbox identified on Chesil Beach to the south east of Castle Beach Cottage and visible an extant structure on aerial photographs. The pillbox is square on plan and constructed of concrete. It was constructed in 1940 and was situated within the Abbotsbury Defence area, which at this time, was manned by the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. A field visit in 1996 found the structure to be in a good condition.

Full Description

Square type 26 pillbox. [Shown on OS 1:2500 sheet SY 5485 - 5585 (1963)].W of Lawrence's Cottage, on the Burton road. It was situated within the Abbotsbury Defence which was defended by the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. <1-3> A World War II type 26 pillbox identified on Chesil Beach to the south east of Castle Beach Cottage and visible an extant structure on aerial photographs <4-5>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
