Summary

A Neolithic stone axehead was found in 1938 in the bank between a road and watercress beds at Magiston Farm, Frampton. It is now in Dorset County Museum, Dorchester. Two ground stone axes from the same farm are also in Dorset County Museum. Both were found in 1936 whilst making a watercress bed at the farm.

Full Description

(SY 63539660) "Two stone Neolithic axeheads, 1936, in dark soil in gravel bed". <1> Acc No. 1938.25.1. Found in the bank between the road and the watercress beds. <2> Two ground greenstone axeheads from Magiston Farm, presented to the Dorset County Museum by Mr Dunn in 1936. <3> A stone axe head from Magiston Farm, Frampton, presented to the Dorset County Museum by Mr O.G.F Dunn 1938. <5> Accession Nos.1936.40.1, 1936.66.1. Petrological classification of axes, Group 1. <5> Both were found whilst making a watercress bed at the farm in the valley of the Sydling Water. <6> The three axes are on show in the Dorset County Museum. The butt end of the axe, 1938.25.1, is broken. <7> Mr O.G.F Dunn, a former owner of the water cress beds, has left the district and could not be traced. Siting in Authy 1 for the 1936 finds accepted. The bank where the 1938 find was made, extends from SY 63459641 to SY 63459620. <8>
