Full Description

Half a mile north of the village of Sydling St Nicholas at the cross-roads were the remains of a cross. A fragment of the shaft with the mutilated figure of a saint on one side was visible above the ground in 1812. The base is probably buried in the ground. The cross is called Moss or Mat's Cross and the surrounding fields Moss-Cross Fields. <1> The site of the cross, of which there are no remains, falls within a pasture field. Although among old residents the cross site and cross roads are occasionally called "Mat's Cross", the usual name and that used by Dorset County Council is "Marr's Cross". <2> The cross site now falls within a private garden, levelling of the ground at this point has not revealed a cross base. <4>
