Full Description

(SY 66599737) Holy Trinity Church [NAT] (1) The Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Godmanstone, is built of local flint and stone rubble, banded with flint and stone facings, and has freestone dressings. The chancel-arch and the south doorway date from the 12th century and the rest of the nave was rebuilt perhaps in the 15th century when the west tower was added. The north and south chapels and south porch were added early in the 16th century and the chancel was rebuilt. In the 17th century the tower was partly rebuilt. The church was extensively restored in the 19th century; the north chapel and chancel being largely rebuilt, the latter in 1848. Grade B. (2,3) Church of the Holy Trinity. Grade I. Pitman Monument, early C 18 table tomb. Grade II*. (4) The C 12 tympanum over the south doorway is the only Dorset example with purely geometric ornament. (5) Pevsner questions whether the fabric of the south doorway is truly Norman as suggested by Auth 2. (Auth 4 suggests it is a C19 restoration). (6)
