Full Description

Grinsell recorded this barrow as 27 paces in diameter and 3½ feet in height. On arable consists of core of earth and flints enclosed in chalky circumference. <1> Site of a bowl barrow, part of a group on Bincombe Down, just south of the Winterborne Came parish boundary. Listed by Grinsell as Bincombe 7 and by RCHME as Bincombe 40. Formerly described by the RCHME as a mound 60 feet in diameter and 4.5 feet high, by 1980 the Ordnance Survey recorded it as a mound 24 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres high, with no visible traces of a surrounding ditch. <1-2> ('A' - SY 68468569) Tumulus [NR] (site of) [NAT] ('B' - SY 68428569; 'C' - SY 68508569; 'D' - SY 68538568) Tumuli [NR] (1) Four barrows south of the Ridgeway:- 'A' Bowl barrow 15 paces diameter by 1/4 ft. high. 'B' Bowl barrow 60 feet diameter by 4 1/2 feet high, a core of earth and flints embedded in a chalky circumference. 'C'. Bowl barrow 20 paces diameter by 1ft. High. 'D' Bowl barrow 16 paces diameter by 3/4ft. High. (2,3) 'A' SY 68468569. Nearly ploughed out. Only an amorphous ground swelling visible. 'B' SY 68428569. Bowl barrow of diameter 24.0m. And height 1.5m. No visible evidence of a ditch. 'C' SY 68498569. Bowl barrow of diameter 18.0m., and height 0.4m. No visible ditch. 'D' SY 68538569. Bowl barrow, diameter 15.0m., height 0.2m. No visible ditch. All barrows in arable. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. (4) Visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. <5> The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
