Full Description
A watching brief by Poole Museum at 2-4 New Quay Road Hamworthy in 1985 revealed two undated, but probably late Iron Age or Roman, features -- a pit and a possible salt-boiling hearth. The pit was 1.2 m across and 0.9 m deep. The possible hearth comprised a red fired clay layer 0.7 m long and 0.1 m thick with soot/charcoal on the upper surface. The fragments of fired clay from this feature were heavily sand-tempered and 20-60 mm thick with a surface on one side only. One fragment was indented, perhaps to take a fire bar. <1>
