Summary
The top of a densely-packed layer of oyster shell was observed at a depth of about 1.1 m below present ground level to the rear of The Custom House in 1995-6 during observations by Poole Museum. This is likely to be part of the same shell midden discovered below the Town Cellars and under Paradise Street, which has been dated to the late 11th century AD.

Full Description
Archaeological observations by Poole Museum Service during alterations to the Custom House in 1995-6 revealed the top of a densely-packed layer of oyster shell at a depth of about 1.1 m below present ground level. These shells are likely to be part of the same shell midden discovered below the Town Cellars and under Paradise Street, which has been dated to the late 11th century AD. (1) (2)
