Two post medieval extractive pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1947 in Beech Valley in the centre of Brownsea Island. The pits may have been excavated to extract clay or sand. They pits are grouped closely together and measure 28 m by 90 m and 110 m by 50 m. (1) The site is not visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project. (2) This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
