Monument record MDO29131 - Post medieval to modern quarrying, south of Swanage

An extensive area of possibly late post medieval to modern quarrying is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s on to the south of Swanage.

An extensive area of possibly late post medieval to modern quarrying is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1950s to the south of Swanage. The quarries are located on limestone, visible as pits over an area measuring approximately 540 m by 90 m. (1) The quarrying continues to the north of the project area. This site was digitally plotted during the South west Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). Further details of the quarrying area to the north of that described in (1) were plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project from aerial photographs from 1945 to 1982 and . The quarrying area to the north consisted of shafts, larger shallower excavation areas, and several areas of buildings. Narrow walled enclosures could be seen around at least six of the shafts. The area includes several shafts which have been recorded separately (see MWX4049-51, MWX4060-4, MWX4066, MWX4069-70, MWX4073). (2-9)
