Traces of a Roman building with a substantial wall footing and chalk floor, possibly dating to the 2nd century AD were recorded in a gas-main trench along South Street in 1979.

Full Description
Traces of a Roman building were recorded in a gas-main trench along South Street in 1979. This building comprised a substantial footing on the south side of a chalk floor (which sealed traces of an early Roman timber building). Overlying the floor was building debris contining wall plaster.
Flavian samian was recovered from below the chalk floor and 2nd-3rd century samian found in the levels above this building. (1-2)
