Full Description

First World War rifle range, possibly an earlier aspect of the more modern Fleet Rifle Range (MDO893), is visible as a series of banks on aerial photographs taken by Crawford in 1923 at Chickerell to the west of Weymouth (1/2). The Range seems to lie at an alternative angle appearing to run north to south rather than the east west orientation of the modern range. The range seems to be out of use by the 1940's and the bank at the northern end seems to have been removed (3-6). The southern parts of the site are still visible on the most recent comprehensive aerial imagery available to the project (7/8). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
