Full Description

"During road-widening on the corner of Church Street and High East Street (SY 6939074), a well was discovered. Its centre, diameter 1.10 m was approximately 2.20 m north-east of the north-east buttresses of All Saints Church. Six courses of chalk-block steyning (max. height 0.50 m) rested on natural chalk. The topmost chalk blocks, at 0.30 m below pavement level, supported a dome of Broadmayne bricks with no opening. No water-table was seen and the maximum depth of the well was 3.3 m below the top of the steyning. The well was filled with concrete after recording. "(1)
