Monument record MDO30127 - Mound on Askerswell Down, Litton Cheney

A mound once interpreted as a possible Bronze Age bowl barrow, though thought more likely to be a spoil heap. Excavation by John Wacher in 1956 showed this feature was not an antiquity.

Probably spoil heaps. <2> Two mounds each 6 paces in diameter and 2 1/2 ft high. Both are doubtful bowl barrows, and may be upcast from fairly recent diggings. <3> Two grass covered mounds, each 6.0m in diameter and 0.7m high, with no visible surrounding ditches. Both mounds are in poor condition, dug into and rabbitted. There has been much surface quarrying in the vicinity, and the mounds may be heaps of overburden. Doubtful bowl barrows. <4> Spoil mounds. <5> Mounds now ploughed out and deleted from field doc. <6> Both mounds were excavated in 1956 and shown to be mounds of earth, probably spoil from quarring. <7> Full excavation report. <9> Totally excavated and reconstituted, barrow was surrounded by wide and shallow flat-bottomed ditch, a roughly circular pit in the chalk at the centre of the mound was sterile, above it was a primary extended adult male inhumation, both hands may not have been severed and buried first but slipped through the other bones after the body had decayed and almost above the grave was a post hole , Near the surface were the remains of a secondary inurned, upright urn of D/R type, too crushed to be restored , probably Bronze Age. <8> <10>
