Full Description

A field system of uncertain date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 2004. The site is centred around SY 3875 8685 and comprises a group of conjoined linear fields, some of which contain smaller rectilinear ditched enclosures, that extends over a roughly triangular area to the south of the railway. The fields have a different alignment to those marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and could therefore be considerably earlier. <1-2> A group of field boundaries, enclosures, trackways and numerous pits are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of fields to the north-west of Rushton <3-4>. They are considered likely to be the remains of a late prehistoric field system. It is possible the pits may have a natural, geological origin. These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
