Full Description
A linear series of seven short parallel banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 on Whitcombe Vale (1) They may be butts associated with the site of a early twentieth century firing range. The features are still visible on the most recent Google earth aerial photographs and Geomatics lidar (2). They were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
A rifle range is shown on the 1st epoch Ordnance Survey map. The butts may therefore be older than supposed from the aerial photographic evidence.
