Full Description
An area of medieval, post medieval, or possibly earlier, extractive pits are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of 1997 to the east of Burleston and west of Tolpuddle. The pits are located on Portsdown Chalk Formation and are visible over an area measuring approximately 270 m by 180 m. They measure between 2 by 2 m and 30 m by 10 m. (1-2) The pits are located within an area of prehistoric field boundaries (see MDO30639), but it is difficult to tell whether they pre- or post-date these features. This feature was digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
