Full Description

A possible post medieval wood bank, or early modern military earthwork, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946, on Tonerspuddle Heath and Millicent's Plantation, adjacent to the Tank Training Area of Bovington Camp. The earthworks comprise: two sections of curvilinear banks and ditches, joined by a straight section of ditch and a parallel section of bank, all arranged on a north east-south west alignment. A straight section of bank extends to the south west from the other earthworks. The area is shown as partially under tree cover on the 1st ed OS map, so the features may be the remains of wood bank of earlier date, but a military function is also a possibility, given the location within the tank training area. (1-2) These features were digitally plotted during the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
