Monument record MDO3147 - Bowl barrow in the Bronkham Hill group, Winterborne St Martin

Summary
Bronze Age ditched bowl barrow, part of a larger barrow cemetery extending along the South Dorset Ridgeway. Field investigations record it as an extant mound crossed by a later linear dyke. Also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs.

Full Description
A ditched bowl barrow on edge of steep drop to North East, around 72 feet in diameter with a mound about 7 feet high, and encircled by a ditch 12 feet wide and 2 feet deep. A dyke (MDO3248) runs over top of the mound {1-2}.
Bowl barrow crossed by a linear dyke. Overall diameter 30.0m., height 4.2m. Ditch 3.0m. Wide and 0.3m. Deep but mutilated on south by a track {3}.
Also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs {4-8}, seen as a disturbed internal mound measuring approximately 13 metres in diameter, surrounded by a ditch 0.8 meters wide. A second outer ditch is also visible, approximately 1.3 metres wide and seperated from the internal mound by a berm 4.3 metres wide. This site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
