Summary

Site of a Bronze Age bell barrow, part of a larger barrow cemetery extending along the South Dorset Ridgeway. Recorded as an extant mound by field investigators and also visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs.

Full Description

Bell barrow around 74 feet in diameter with a mound 11 feet high, and a berm up to 9 feet wide. The encircling ditch is up to 9 feet wide. 18 ft wide. Damaged, with flattened top {1-2}. Gorse-covered barrow, diameter of mound 30.0m. And height 3.9m. Above ditch. Flat top 10.0m. Diameter. Ditch visible south-east side only 2.5m. Wide and average 0.4m. Deep. No conclusive visual evidence of a berm but very large size suggests this was a bell-barrow {3}. Also visible as a large earthwork mound on aerial photographs {4-6}, measuring approximately 30 metres in diameter. This site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project
