Summary

Site of a Bronze Age barrow. Field investigations have recorded it as a bowl barrow, but cropmarks on aerial photographs suggest it could be a pond barrow.

Full Description

Three bowl barrows. 'A' 36 paces in diameter, 6.5 ft high. <2> Three bowl barrows, one now ploughed out. 'A' Diameter 32.0m, height 2.0m with no visible ditch. This barrow is now under the plough. <3> Three barrows: 'A' Bowl (SY 64898676) on highest point along this stretch of Ridgeway. Diameter 87 ft, height 6 ft. Ploughed. <4> <6> Round barrow N of Ridgeway. Scheduled. (Three barrows shown on Maplet). <7> 'A' SY 64888676. Bowl barrow, diameter 34.0m, height 2.2m. No visible ditch. Ploughed. 'A' and 'C' re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <8> Site of a Bronze Age bowl barrow, one of a group of three bowl barrows (MDO360-62) and part of a larger barrow cemetery extending along the Dorset Ridgeway. Also visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs <12>. The cropmark suggests it could be a pond barrow, with an internal depression measuring approximately 14.5 metres in diameter, surrounded by a wide bank or berm, approximately 5 metres wide, and an outer ditch, 4 metres in width. This site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
