Full Description

Bowl barrow inside Maiden Castle; 48 feet diameter by 1 foot high. Hollowed on top. (Possibly excavated by Cunnington in 1865. <1> <3> SY 66618843. Bowl barrow under permanent pasture. Diameter 20.0m., height 0.7m. No visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4> The monument was surveyed as part of the Maiden Castle project during 1984-1985, for further information see archive collection. <5> Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs <9>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project. In 1865, E Cunnington reported that he had dug into a small mound at the east end of the hillfort, and found "a Roman fibula. A raised heap of flints was removed, and two feet below, a small pillar of chalk about eighteen inches high, near which was an interment surrounded with large stones. The body had been apparently buried in haste, head and feet together, and both legs broken" (quoted in Wheeler 1943, page 7). Wheeler suggests that Cunnington is actually referring to the barrow at the western end of Maiden Castle. Recent survey work at Maiden Castle (1984-6), including RCHME earthwork survey, does not appear to have encountered any evidence for a barrow at the eastern end of the hillfort interior. <13>
