A system of beach defence groynes extending over a distance of more than 1.2 km is shown on the seaward shore of the Sandbanks promontory on the OS 2nd edn 25in map (1901) (1). Only vestiges of these survived by the time of the OS 5th edn 1:2500 map (2) but current mapping (3) shows a series of breakwaters in the same area.
