Summary
A large glass pavilion called the ‘Crystal Palace of the Summer and Winter Gardens’ when it was built in 1875, and said to have been capable of holding around 4,000 people. The Winter Gardens was leased to Bournemouth Corporation in 1893, and the pavilion began to be used as a concert venue. It was the home of Dan Godfrey’s Bournemouth Band, which was formed that year, and later became the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra; visiting conductors included Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry, Jean Sibelius and Gustav Holst. The building was demolished in 1935.

A large glass structure is shown in the recreation area named as Winter Gardens, formerly Cranborne Gardens, on the OS 2nd edn 25in map (1898) (1).
