Full Description
The OS 1st edn 25in map (1871) (1) shows a small stream running from a short steep-sided valley to the shore. The 2nd edn (1898) (2) does not depict the stream and shows a disturbed are approximately 160m across with an apparent pit to the W and a series of finger dumps to the E; a gravel pit is shown on the cliff to the W of the site. The 3rd edn (1909) (3) and 4th edn (1924) (4) maps show two substantial pits, that to the W marked 'Sand'. The post World War 2 5th edn map (1947) (5) shows the area as Honeycombe Chine; it is likely that the pits were by this time out of use because the adjacent cliffs had been developed with walks and shelters and the shore frontage to the S provided with a promenade and lined with beach huts. The site has subsequently been developed (6)
