Full Description

William Tucker of Christchurch noted that in the mid 19th century 'the whole district of what is now Southbourne had only the buildings of what was then Cellar Farm' (1). The OS 1st edn 25in map (1871) (2) showed a group of buildings on an elongated plot between fields, identified as Cellarfield Farm; the 2nd edn map (1898) (3) showed a similar group, marked as Cellars Farm. The rectilinear pattern of fields around the farmstead suggests that it was a farm of post-medieval orgin, probably taken in from former coastal heath. No buildings remained at the time of the 3rd edn map (1909) (4), when much of the surrounding land had been laid out in roads for the suburban development of Southbourne. The road adjacent to the site of the farmstead was shown as Cellars Farm Road. The 5th edn map (1947) showed part of the site redeveloped for housing. The name of the farm probably referred to fishing cellars or stores nearby on the coast (MDO32916).
