Full Description

The place-name White Pits on the OS 1st edn map (1893) (1) suggests possible extractive activity. A paper on local geology (2) refers to 'fine white sands' and to 'light-coloured argillaceous marls' on this part of the coast, which may have been extracted for domestic or industrial use, or for agricultural manuring.
