Summary

Site of a possible Bronze Age bowl barrow visible a cropmarked ring ditch on aerial photographs. A small, circular ditch offset within this to the south-east suggests this may be a reused hengiform enclosure of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age origin. It forms part of a larger group of prehistoric burial/ritual monuments located across Pound Hill.

Full Description

'C' A grass covered bowl barrow, diameter 25.0m, height 2.4m. Hollow in top. 'D' and 'E'. Two bowl barrows of average height 0.4m. Both are under the plough. <2> Group of five barrows on Pound Hill: 'C' (Winterbourne Abbas No 54) SY 62329089. Bowl barrow 60ft diameter and 10 1/2ft high. Excavation hollow on top. <3> <5> 'C'. SY 62329088. Bowl barrow, 22.0 by 19.0 metres, and 3.8 metres high. 'B' and 'C' have not been ploughed over. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <6> Site of a possible Bronze Age bowl barrow visible a cropmarked ring ditch on aerial photographs, approximately 25m diameter. A possible hengiform enclosure of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age origin (MDO21291) is visible as a small, circular ditch offset within this to the south-east. They may both be contemporary with one another or the result of separate phases of construction of the monument, such as the re-use or adoption of a Neolithic monument in the Bronze Age. It forms part of a larger group of prehistoric burial/ritual monuments located across Pound Hill. <9-11>
