Monument record MDO3693 - Chettle Long Barrow, Chettle
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A long barrow set on a gentle east-facing slope west of Chettle village, at the north-east corner of the former Eastbury Park. The mound is orientated south-east to north-west and is now crossed by the parish boundary between Chettle and Tarrant Gunville. Numerous human bones were found when part of the barrow was removed to make a grotto some time before 1767. These bones may have been from chambers within the mound but may also represent burials inserted at a later date, possibly Saxon.

Full Description
The long barrow is situated 1500m The substantial mound is relatively well preserved and Lidar data has provided dimensions for this monument. The data suggests a length of 66m, a width of 27m and a maximum height of 4.5m. The survey Identified a positive linear anomaly parallel to the east edge of the mound, representing a flanking ditch of the long barrow. It measures 52m long and 6m at its widest. Given the bulk of the mound, this suggests the ditch may have been of significant depth if the flanking ditches acted as sources of mound material. <8>
