Monument record MDO37240 - Early Iron Age pit (7337) on Southdown Ridge, Weymouth

One of a group of pits in an alignment on the crest of a ridge, and interpreted as forming the northern boundary of an early Iron Age settlement.

Pit 7337 was oval in plan, measuring 1.7m by 1.48m and 0.22m deep. The single fill was dark brown clayey silt mottled with yellow limestone grit and containing several blocks and numerous fragments of limestone. The excavators considered that, while some of this material may have eroded from the sides of the pit, an element of deliberate back filling was likely. Six sherds of pottery were found, including a carinated bowl fragment and a shell-tempered body sherd with incised horizontal line. This group was broadly dated to the 8th to 5th centuries BC. {1}
