Monument record MDO37355 - Medieval ditches, Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme Evaluation Trench 10

Three small ditches, two containing medieval pottery, were found in evaluation trench 10 of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route. These ditches corresponded to a T-shaped geophysical anomaly. The record for this monument has been created with support from Wessex Water.

Three ditches (10003, 10005, 10007) were found in evaluation trench 4 of the archaeological evaluation of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route. Two of these ditches (10003 and 10005) were aligned NW-SE and were immediately adjacent to each other. They measured 1.05m and 1.25m across and were 0.22m and 0.32m deep with rounded or irregular flat-bottomed profiles. Both contained a small quantity of medieval pottery of 11th to 14th century date. The third ditch (10007) was aligned NE-SW and was 1.7m wide and 0.6m deep with an eroded flat-bottomed profile. The only finds recovered were two worked flint flakes from the upper part of the ditch. [1] The three ditches corresponded to a T-shaped geophysical anomaly (316) identified during the geophysical survey of the route of the Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme route.
