Monument record MDO37464 - Enclosed medieval strip fields, The Groves, Bothenhampton

Please read our .

Summary

A system of disused strip fields known as The Groves lies on Eldon Hill. The boundaries are visible as extant hedges on aerial photographs taken in 1948. Whilst of post medieval date they are likely to fossilise the lines of earlier medieval strip fields. The features were identified during the Marshwood Vale NMP project however they were not generally plotted due to being extant in 1948 and therefore lying outside of the remit of that project. The system is marked on the OS 1st edition map and those small sections not recorded by the OS were plotted.
