Full Description

MELPLASH COURT: The property came to the "PAULET family in the 16thc., ..and the house was rebuilt early in the 17thc… Late in the 17thc a low wing was added on the N.E., and a porch on the N. of the hall. The former W. wing was destroyed at some uncertain period and replaced in 1922 by the existing wing, which has..since..been extended to the S. PIGEON HOUSE: This is a circular stone structure wih a conical roof and a square headed doorway. It was probably built in the 17th C. <3> [Similar information]. <1> I believe that part of the house is 16th cent. It is still known as MELPLASH COURT <4.1>. A large well preserved house which retains little external evidence of antiquity. Since OS 6" 1903 a large wing has been added to the North West and another but smaller one to the South West while the long narrow North East wing has been largely removed. The house now fronts to the North East. The oldest portion adjoins the so called chapel (for which see Dorset 30 SW 5) and in the East face there is a mullioned window with dripstone. The pigeon house at A is of stone with a stone tiled roof and it is well preserved. It has walls 0.9m thick and has an internal diameter of 3.8m. <4>
