Summary

A gravel pit shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map, on which it is described as 'Old Gravel Pit'. The gravel pit is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.

Full Description

A post medieval gravel pit at Knighton Heath is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (2). The feature is elongated and irregular in shape, measuring around 100m long by up to 32m wide. It is recorded as an old gravel pit on the OS 1st Edition map, where it is shown to be situated at the northern end of Knighton Heath (1). In 1946 two roofed buildings are visible within the feature; these have the appearance of private dwellings (2). The site is developed as housing on current Google Earth imagery and the feature is no longer visible. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
