Full Description

An extractive pit measuring around 100m long and 35m wide (increasing to 70m wide at its northern extent) is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s (1). The extractive pit borders the Pilsdon and Stoke Abbott civil parish boundary and is overlain by a current upstanding field boundary shown on the OS First Edition historic mapping, suggesting a probable post medieval date. The quarry is not shown on the OS First Edition map. The northmost area of extraction also appears to extend into the field to the west, but this is not clear. The quarry is still visible as a wooded depression on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
