Monument record MDO38637 - Post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, Newgate Farm, Broadwindsor
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Post medieval narrow ridge and furrow to the southeast of Newgate Farm is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. The cultivation marks are located within and appear to respect enclosures of probable post medieval origin but within a wider medieval field pattern. This, and their relatively narrow form, may indicate a post medieval or later date, but an earlier date is also possible. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description
Post medieval narrow ridge and furrow to the southeast of Newgate Farm is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. The cultivation marks are located within and appear to respect enclosures of probable post medieval origin but within a wider medieval field pattern. This, and their relatively narrow form, may indicate a post medieval or later date, but an earlier date is also possible. Post 1947 Newgate Farm was constructed and now occupies the western end of the northernmost unit of cultivation. The marks are no longer visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
