Monument record MDO38645 - Historic field boundary, Whetham Farm, Broadwindsor

An historic field boundary to the southwest of Whetham Farm is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. Its morphology suggests a possible post medieval origin, although it aligns with adjacent features and boundaries (MDO38644) that indicate a potentially earlier date. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

The narrow linear ditch of a historic field boundary to the southwest of Whetham Farm is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s (1). The narrow rectilinear ditch extends from the corner of the field to the north that contains additional ditched linear boundaries (MDO38644), possibly of medieval origin although a later date is possible. It aligns with these and with the wider field pattern which is likely to be broadly medieval in date but which has evidence of post medieval reorganisation. This ditched feature has a different morphology to the features in MDO38644, however, and appears to extend the whole length of the enclosure in which it sits, although this is less clear towards its southern end. On its east side about two thirds of its length southwest is an area of post medieval extraction (MDO38646). This area of quarrying abuts the boundary, indicating that the boundary was in situ and still extent when quarrying commenced. The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
