Monument record MDO38742 - Historic field boundaries, Colepay Cottage, Burstock, Broadwindsor
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A series of historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the west of Colepay Cottage in Burstock and Broadwindsor parishes are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s. They are located within narrow enclosures of probable medieval origin, probably former strip fields, and run perpendicular to these. This may indicate boundaries of post medieval origin, although an ealier date is also possible. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.

Full Description
A series of historic banked and ditched field boundaries to the west of Colepay Cottage in Burstock and Broadwindsor parishes are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1). They are located within narrow enclosures of probable medieval origin, probably former strip fields, and run perpendicular to these. To the northwest the boundaries are relatively close set and parallel, which may indicate former strip field boundaries of medieval origin, although this is not certain, and a medieval or post medieval date for these boundaries is equally possible. The boundaries are no longer visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (2). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
