Full Description
An extensive area of post medieval extraction to the east of Coleplay Cottages, Broadwindsor, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and on the latest Lidar imagery (2). The OS 1st Edition map (3) marks the site of an 'old quarry' here, but the quarrying has since extended beyond this, along the lower slopes on the west side of Conegar Hill. Some of the scarps and lynchets visible within this area may rather be the result of natural geology. The site shows well on an aerial photograph taken in 1971 (4) but is showing as partially under scrub and woodland on the latest Google Earth imagery (5). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
