Full Description

A series of small post medieval extractive pits to the southeast of Spring House, Broadwindsor, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and 1970s (2) - these latter show the site particularly well. The quarries extend for around 170m along a section of historic trackway running south from the B3163 towards a small enclosure and possible extractive pit (MDO38992). The trackway is shown on the OS 1st Edition map and in an aerial photograph of 1947 (1) but is only partially extant in an aerial photograph of 1971 (2) and is not visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3) - some of the quarry areas can still be identified, however. The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
