Full Description

Extensive post medieval extractive pits on Waddon Hill, Stoke Abbott, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1) and 1970s (2). The quarrying extends to around 285m in length and covers the western end and slopes of the hilltop, which has resulted in some damage and loss to the Roman fort (MDO2531) here; the quarrying also extends to a small area within an entrance to the fort on the east side of Waddon Hill. The scars left by excavations of the Roman fort (MDO2531) in the 1960s are visible within the quarried area on an aerial photograph taken in 1971 (2). Remains of linear banks around the edges of the hill may be associated with the fort (MDO2531) or earlier occupation on Waddon Hill rather than extraction, but this is not certain. The site is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery (3). The site was digitally plotted during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
