Monument record MDO39369 - Medieval settlement, Catmead, Mill Street, Puddletown

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological evaluation in 2001 and subsequent excavation in 2004 revealed ditches aligned roughly east-west, interpreted as possible boundary ditches which also served for drainage. Post-holes, a pit and concentrations of medieval pottery suggested possible medieval settlement in the area, possibly on higher ground later occupied by a post-medieval earthwork enclosure. The various features spanned a date range from late 11th to early 14th century, though most were 12th to 13th century. A single piece of Cheddar-type pottery of late Saxon date was found.
