Full Description

A series of post medieval extractive pits are visible in fields to the southwest of Hurn Court Farm, Hurn, on current Lidar imagery (1). The features comprise narrow north northeast to south southwest aligned parallel bands and angular scarps extending towards the north bank of the River Stour. Some of the extractive pits may re-use former medieval strip field boundaries; their spacing and alignment conform with those of historic field boundaries on both sides of the River Stour at this location, which may be associated with areas of former medieval strips with a larger area of medieval open field. These former boundary divisions may have formed the basis for allocating subsequent area of gravel extraction along the river terraces of the River Stour during the post medieval period. The features are visible as shallow angular cuts into the lower valley slopes above the River Stour on 2012 Google Earth imagery (2). The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
