Full Description

Banked and ditched historic field boundaries in fields to the east of Throop, Bournemouth, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (1). The boundaries are broadly rectilinear in form and on the same alignment as adjacent field boundaries shown on the OS 1st Edition map (2). The form and alignment of the boundaries indicate a probable medieval or post medieval origin, possibly fossilising former medieval strip fields within a larger area of medieval open field. The linear boundaries are located within pasture fields within flood plain on the south bank of the River Stour. They are still visible as earthworks on current Google Earth imagery (3) and were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
