Full Description

Historic ditched field boundaries to the northwest of Hurn Court are visible as cropmarks on a 2005 vertical aerial photograph (1). The field boundaries comprise narrow ditched linears with a slightly curvilinear form, which may be associated with small agricultural enclosures or enclosures within former woodland: the OS 1st Edition map shows the historic fields in which the features are located to contain a scatter of trees (2). The fields are borded by thick woodland fringes, indicating that they were created through woodland clearance, probably at some point during the medieval to post medieval period. The ditched linears within the fields may therefore have a medieval, or possibly earlier, origin. Alternatively they may be post medieval or later in date. The features are not visible on current Google Earth imagery. The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
