Full Description
Three post medieval extractive pits to the southeast of Tole Cottage, Sopley, are visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1). The shallow depressions vary in length between 50 and 55m and in width between 15m and 25m. These may be part of a series of naturally formed hollows of geological origin aligned northwest to southeast along the west side of the Avon Valley at Sopley. The scarped edges indicate some extractive workings, however.
The features are still faintly visible on current Google Earth imagery, with some possible infilling having occurred (2).
The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
