Full Description

A large post medieval extractive pit to the south of Tole Cottage, Sopley, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (1) and current Lidar imagery (2). A ditched trackway leads towards the centre-most pit from the north (1). A deep pit in the centre of the extractive area measures 60m by 30m and was filled with water by 1948 (1). Adjacent to this are two shallower area of possible extraction, all together extending over an area of around 103m by 82m. By 1962 the easternmost of these adjacent shallow areas was also filled by water (3). The features are still visible and water-filled on current Google Earth imagery The features were digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP.
