Monument record MDO39832 - Undated field system, Horton Common, Horton
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A bank and ditched field system of uncertain origin is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1989 on the eastern side of Horton Common. The features run on a completely different alignment to the modern system of fields and may be of medieval or even earlier origin. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP and appear to be cut by and therefore predate the trackways described in MDO39831.

Full Description
A bank and ditched field system of uncertain origin is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1989 on the eastern side of Horton Common (1-2). The features run on a completely different alignment to the modern system of fields and may be of medieval or even earlier origin. Parallel banked linears within the north-easternmost field may be the remains of medieval strip fields. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP and appear to be cut by and therefore predate the trackways described in MDO39831.
